Operating Room Teams Instructor Course

For clinicians, educators and simulation technicians who use simulation as a teaching tool  

4 days

Experienced simulation educators lead this intensive immersion in healthcare simulation. It covers high level elements and concepts involved in running a simulation program. Attendees join a growing community of Institute for Medical Simulation (IMS) graduates who are positioned as leaders in the field. Daily formats are predominantly experiential and include simulation scenarios, lectures, small and large group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises with feedback.

Program Objectives:

  • Develop interprofessional educator teams to use simulation as a training medium for Operating Room Teamwork
  • Enhance teamwork in the Operating Room
  • Positively affect the quality of the working and safety cultures within the Operating Room

Topics include:

  • Creating a challenging and safe learning environment
  • Teaching clinical thinking and skills
  • Teaching teamwork and crisis resource management
  • Developing and improving debriefing skills
  • Preparing, building, conducting, and debriefing realistic simulation scenarios relevant to Operating Room teams
  • Avoiding simulation pitfalls and ineffective debriefing techniques
  • Introducing behavioral and educational research paradigms
  • Advancing simulation within one’s institution

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credit:

This course is sponsored by CRICO/RMF of the Harvard Medical Institutions. CRICO/Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CRICO/RMF designates this live activity for a maximum of 34 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses, Midwives, and other healthcare providers will receive a "Certificate of Attendance" with credit hours that may be converted to Continuing Education (CEs) or Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Massachusetts-licensed nurses can find information about converting Continuing Medical Education (CME) to Continuing Education Units (CEU) at this Mass.gov site: http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/gov/departments/dph/programs/hcq/dhpl/nursing/faq/continuing-education-.html. Nurses from other states should check with their respective State Board or credentialing body for guidance on this process.

Course Prerequisites:

We suggest that you apply for this course as part of an interprofessional team, consisting of 3 to 6 members ideally including at least one surgeon, one anesthesiologist and one O.R. nurse. Teams may also include an educator and a simulation technician. That being said, we are aware of the challenges involved in getting an entire team out of the O.R. for a 4 day course, therefore we welcome partial teams and individual registrations.

To apply for this course:

Each participant must fill out the online application form at: http://www.harvardmedsim.org/ims-registration.php. If applying as an individual please provide the documents below and email to Paul Montgomery (pmontgomery@harvardmedsim.org).

Those applying as part of a team should note in the box provided for additional information that they are part of your Institution's Operating Room (OR) Team. The team leader should also note that they are the contact person for the team and ensure that the following documents are emailed to Paul Montgomery (pmontgomery@harvardmedsim.org).

  1. A one page proposal for an institutional project your team plans to develop during the course, where you: describe the current problem that your project will address; define the beneficiaries and expected accomplishments; identify the necessary resources and barriers to implementation; and describe how you will evaluate whether your team's project has created an improvement.
  2. A 1-2 page biosketch for each team member (not their complete CV), including: the team's goals for attending the course, each member's profession, position, specialty, and professional experience; their educational background; and any educational activities over the past 5 years.

Enrollment Policy:

You will be informed of acceptance to your selected course/workshop by email within two weeks of our receiving your completed application. Your tuition is due immediately upon acceptance. Once accepted you will receive another email containing an invoice with payment instructions. Please note that acceptance does not mean enrollment. Once accepted, you are placed on a wait list. You are not enrolled, and do not have a reserved seat, until we have received your full tuition.

Course seats are filled in the order we receive tuition payments. Since our courses fill quickly it is important for you to send in your tuition immediately to secure a seat. Once your tuition payment is received, you will be taken off the wait list and enrolled in your desired course/workshop provided a seat is still available. If all seats in your preferred course/workshop are filled by the time we receive your tuition payment, you will be informed that it is full and given the option to remain on the wait list in the event that a seat later become available; switch to another course at a later date with available seats or receive a refund.

Payment Information:

The Center for Medical Simulation accepts payment by credit card, wire transfer, money order or cashier’s check in US dollars. Personal checks are not accepted. You will be receiving an invoice via email from Rhonda Young. Your payment is due immediately upon receipt. If you would like to pay by credit card there is a link in your invoice that you can click on, or paste into a browser, that will take you to a page on our website where you can make your payment. If would like to make payment by any other method please contact Rhonda Young at ryoung@harvardmedsim.org.

Most problems paying by credit card are due to using an older version of the Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox browsers. Also, some organizations may block your ability to pay for services online. If you encounter problems, try updating your browser and/or paying from your home computer. If you are still having problems, please contact us at info@harvardmedsim.org.

Cancellation Policy:

If you must cancel we will refund your tuition less a $250 processing fee provided another paid candidate is able to fill your seat. Otherwise, you will forfeit half your tuition.

If you would like to switch to a course offered at a different date, we will apply your tuition towards the new course provided another paid candidate is able to fill your current seat. Otherwise, you will forfeit half your tuition. If you still want to switch to another course date we will apply half of your paid tuition and you will be billed for the remaining half. Please note that the tuition for a course offered at a later date may be higher. In that case, individuals switching to the later course date will need to pay the difference in the tuition fees.
