SUMMARY:Weekly Webinars - Do Structured Handovers and Checklists Improve Patient Outcomes?
DESCRIPTION:Recording\nWatch On-Demand \n\nTuition\nComplimentary – $0 USD \nRegister Today\nAbout this session\nHospital environments and clinical care has become complex. Managing interfaces across different aspects of the health system is critical\, for example\, patient flow across departments in a hospital. There has been a call for addressing these and other human factors in healthcare\, but it is not clear what interventions are supported by data. \nDr. Saša Sopka\, anesthesiologist and medical education researcher\, and the Medical Director of AIXTRA – Aachen Interdisciplinary Competency Center for Training and Patient Safety has been working to systematically review this topic.  \nDuring this presentation\, Dr. Sopka will review major problems in healthcare and human factors\, explore solutions implemented in aviation and other related fields\, and describe the published experience in healthcare highlighting several unexpected outcomes and examples. Two focus areas will be the Safe Surgery Checklist and IPASS for handovers. \nThe presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A where live audience can interact with the speaker. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the problem of complexity and interface management in healthcare\nDescribe the role of structured communication and checklists to improve patient outcomes.\n\nPre-webinar Preparation\nPlease read: \n\nStarmer AJ\, Spector ND\, Srivastava R\, West DC\, Rosenbluth G\, Allen AD\, et al. Available from: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa0810119\n\nEquipment Requirements\nThe webinar is delivered via Zoom\, a web conferencing platform. All materials and course interactions will occur online. In order to participate fully\, each person must have: \n\nTheir own computer\, tablet\, or mobile phone\nReliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed)\nMicrophone and speakers (built-in\, headset or from webcam)\nOptional: Webcam\n\nRecording\nWe are aware that internet connection speed and bandwidth is not consistent globally and thus can cause intermittent interruption of audio and/or video from the webinar. We do everything we can to minimize problems with streaming data; however\, please be forewarned that poor connections may result in slow or choppy audio and video. We will make the entire webinar recording available after it concludes in the Resources section of our website\, including sharing any links referenced during the webinar. \nHost\n\n\n\n\nDemian Szyld\, MD\, EdM\nSenior Director\, Faculty Development Program\nCenter for Medical Simulation\nBoston\, Massachusetts\, USA \nDr. Szyld is an Emergency Medicine physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Szyld was the first Simulation and Education Fellow at the STRATUS Simulation Center at BWH and is actively involved in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and has chaired the Formal Training Affinity Group\, led the Affiliations Committee and served as an Accreditation Site Reviewer and completed a term on the Board of Directors (2016-2019). \n\n\nPresenters\n\n\n\nSaša Sopka\, MD\, MME\nAnesthesiology and ICU Physician\nUniversity Hospital Aachen\nMedical Director\nAIXTRA\nMedical Faculty\nRWTH Aachen\nAachen\, Germany\nVisiting Faculty\nHarvard Macy Institute\nBoston\, MA\, USA \nDr. Sopka is an Anesthesiology and ICU Physician at the University Hospital in Aachen\, Germany.
