We recommend reading each entire book at your leisure (as completely optional reading)\, prior to Week 1 and then re-reading the required chapters each week. \n\nThanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well by Douglas Stone & Sheila Heen.\nDifficult Conversations: (How to Discuss What Matters Most) by Douglas Stone\, Bruce Patton\, & Sheila Heen.\n\nTechnology Requirements\nAll materials and course interactions will occur online to reach participants from different areas of the world. There are several technology requirements. \nWe will use 3 platforms in this course for learning\, communications\, and sharing materials to foster a community of practice that can continue beyond the course: \n\nLearning Management System (LMS): The CMS Virtual Campus will serve as the platform for delivering course content and collecting feedback through a course evaluation.\nVideo Conferencing: We will use Zoom for our live sessions. You only need a free account to connect to our classes.\nMessaging: To foster our community of practice\, we will use WhatsApp\, for asynchronous discussions. This is a free\, simple\, secure\, and reliable messaging\nand calling app that is available on phones and Windows desktops all over the world.\n\nParticipants will complete activities to orient them to each other and the platforms prior to the start of the course. To participate fully in this course\, each individual – even if they are attending the course with a colleague from the same institution – needs: \n\nTheir own computer (desktop or laptop) for Zoom sessions. We will break out into different rooms in each class. Sharing a computer limits the ability to interact.\nTablet or mobile phone is recommended for quickly responding to conversations in our WhatsApp group. You may use a desktop/web version of WhatsApp to interact with our group chat.\nReliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed). Wired internet access is preferred for our Zoom classes but a strong wireless connection or hotspot will suffice.\nTheir own computer headset (microphone and earphones)\nWebcam\nZoom Desktop Client installed on their computer\nWe recommend downloading\nand installing the Zoom Desktop Client on the computer used for the course for full\nfunctionality including local recording of your pre- and post- self-assessment.\nWhatsApp installed on their mobile device\nWe recommend downloading and installing the WhatsApp on a mobile device to keep up with the class discussion.\nTheir own space away from others because conversations from nearby colleagues can interfere with the audio. The live sessions should be completed in a space not shared with others.\n\n\n \nInstructors\n\n\n\nJanice Palaganas\, PhD\, RN\, NP\, FSSH\, ANEF\, FAAN\nAssociate Director of Health Professions Education\nMGH Institute of Health Professions\, Boston\, Massachusetts\nPrincipal Faculty\nCenter for Medical Simulation\, Boston\, Massachusetts \nDr. Palaganas has developed a passion for teamwork from her background as an emergency nurse\, trauma nurse practitioner\, director of emergency and critical care services\, and faculty for schools of medicine\, nursing\, allied health\, management\, physician assistant studies\, and emergency medicine. As a behavioral scientist and former clinical nurse and hospital administrator\, Dr. Palaganas’ passion is in using health care simulation as a platform for interprofessional education. She served as a committee member of the Institute of Medicine’s report on measuring the impact of interprofessional education on practice. Dr. Palaganas has shaped the field of simulation\, leading the development of the Society for Simulation’s Accreditation and Certification Program\, authored their first textbook\, Defining Excellence in Simulation Programs as editor-in-chief. She urged the development of the recently released Society for Simulation dictionary\, authored seminal articles\, and co-authored field-changing research including the National League for Nursing study for high-stakes assessment using simulation. \n\n\n\n\n\nJo Shapiro\, MD\, FACS\nAssociate Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery\nHarvard Medical School\, Boston\, Massachusetts\nConsultant\nMassachusetts General Hospital Department of Anesthesia\, Pain and Critical Care\, Boston\, Massachusetts\nPrincipal Faculty\nCenter for Medical Simulation\, Boston\, Massachusetts \nDr. Shapiro founded the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Professionalism and Peer Support in 2008 where she served as the director for over 10 years. During that time\, the Center became a model for national and international institutions seeking methods to enhance trust and respect and improve clinician wellbeing. SUMMARY:Healthcare Simulation Essentials: Design and Debriefing
DESCRIPTION:Simulation Instructor Training\nHealthcare Simulation Essentials: Design and Debriefing (HSEDD)\n(formerly known as the Comprehensive Instructor Workshop)\n\n\nIn Person Training Requirement: Complete Vaccination series and Booster against COVID-19\nThe Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) requires course participants to have completed the COVID-19 vaccine series and the COVID-19 booster to attend in person training. We will ask you to complete an attestation form stating that you are vaccinated in order to attend the course. A copy of your vaccination card is not required by CMS; however\, you may need to show proof of vaccination for certain venues in Boston during your stay. \nPlease visit City of Boston: B Together and Commonwealth of Massachusetts: COVID-19 Updates and Information websites for more information about current local requirements. \nFor the purposes of the attestation\, you are considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after completing the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine (e.g.\, Pfizer or Moderna) or two weeks after receiving a single dose of a one-dose vaccine (e.g.\, Johnson & Johnson/Janssen). If you have received a different vaccine\, please email us for clarification. \n\nThe April 3-7\, 2023 course will be offered in person; however\, this course may be converted to online delivery depending on coronavirus travel restrictions. Please contact us with any questions or concerns. \nIn these rapidly changing times\, the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) is innovating to meet the challenge. This flagship educator course is now updated to focus on helping participants make a significant\, measurable impact on their organization. Participants will learn to work practically and strategically to translate simulation into gains for their learners\, colleagues and organization. \nTo leverage your investment in this course and position your work to have the greatest impact\, we will ask you to do some work before you arrive. To get buy-in and support for your program\, we will help you identify a real problem that can be addressed with simulation (e.g. patient safety issues\, curriculum challenges). We will then integrate your questions and challenges about how to address this organizational problem through interactive small group work. \nParticipants in the course can expect the exceptional educational experience that the Center for Medical Simulation is known for. Each course will feature several CMS faculty\, who will work with learners in small groups to develop curriculum to guide their simulation program\, to learn Debriefing with Good Judgment©\, and to design simulation courses. \nWe look forward to working with you in Boston! \nCourse Objectives:\n\nDevelop a strategic plan to elicit buy-in\, support and make an impact with simulation\nDevelop simulation and curricular designs and assessment strategies for clinical readiness and competence\nBuild a challenging and safe learning environment\nConduct and debrief interprofessional simulation scenarios with high learner engagement\nApply the “With Good Judgment” approach to affect behavior change in multiple contexts\nStrengthen your role as an educator and/or change agent\n\nFormat:\nThe course will take place over 5 consecutive days. It is our belief that this intense learning experience is best accomplished with continuous\, individualized mentoring from highly experienced CMS faculty and the development of a peer-led community of practice. The course combines didactic and experiential learning with practice and feedback. Participants will run and debrief simulation cases and receive coaching and feedback on debriefing skills from leading debriefing experts. Days begin at 9:00 AM and end at approximately 5:00 PM US Eastern time.\nLearn more about the Healthcare Simulation Essentials: Design and Debriefing course \n\nTuition\n$5\,995 USD\nNOTE: Tuition covers 1 person to participate in the course.
