DESCRIPTION:Improving Teamwork and Crisis Resource Management (CRM) for Labor and Delivery Clinicians (L&DCRM-10)\nThis full day experiential course refines and advances principles of CRM for application in real clinical settings. \n7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ \nMeets the ABOG annual Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) MOC requirement \nCourse Topics Include:\nDiscussion of how participants are applying crisis resource management principles in clinical practice: \n\nClarifying roles\nCommunicating effectively\nUsing support\nManaging resources\nMaintaining situation awareness\n\nCourse Objectives\nParticipants will: \n\nApply Crisis Resource Management principles including the Name-Claim-Aim paradigm to organize the team and establish an Event Manager in each simulated case.\nUnderstand and practice the clinical management of high stakes low frequency critical events occurring on Labor and Delivery including resuscitation of mother and newborn.\nParticipate in deliberate practice of teamwork skills applicable to Labor and Delivery to improve management of crisis situations\, including the role of event manager\, and practice communication strategies including closed loop communication\, explicit communication and narrative thinking.\nIdentify and participate in deliberate practice of diagnostic problem solving and strategies to avoid fixation\, advancing familiarity with the Emergency Manuals for patient treatment during times of high cognitive load.\nSummarize and practice strategies for culture change with emphasis on inviting input from the team and encouraging speaking up when they have something important to share.\n\n\n \nContinuing Medical Education (CME) Credit:\nAccreditation Statement\nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Massachusetts Medical Society and Center for Medical Simulation. The Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH) is designed to assist in evaluating and developing faculty debriefing and instructional skills. The DASH is a widely used instrument with known psychometric properties. It is designed to be applied in a variety of healthcare disciplines and simulation settings and can be used for summative or formative evaluation. This intensive immersion provides an overview of the six elements to an effective debriefing as defined by the DASH before moving into three rating cycles. \nEquipment Requirements\nThe webinar is delivered via Zoom\, a web conferencing platform. All materials and course interactions will occur online. In order to participate fully\, each person must have: \n\nTheir own computer\, tablet\, or mobile phone\nReliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed)\nMicrophone and speakers (built-in\, headset or from webcam)\nOptional (but preferred): Webcam\n\nEach individual – even those participants who are from the same institution – needs his or her own computer and computer headset (microphone and earphones). We highly encourage you to have a webcam to enrich our interactions. \n\nInstructors\n\n\n\nJanice Palaganas\, PhD\, RN\, NP\, FSSH\, ANEF\, FAAN\nAssociate Director of Health Professions Education\nMGH Institute of Health Professions\, Boston\, Massachusetts\nPrincipal Faculty\nCenter for Medical Simulation\, Boston\, Massachusetts \nDr. Palaganas has developed a passion for teamwork from her background as an emergency nurse\, trauma nurse practitioner\, director of emergency and critical care services\, and faculty for schools of medicine\, nursing\, allied health\, management\, physician assistant studies\, and emergency medicine. As a behavioral scientist and former clinical nurse and hospital administrator\, Dr. Palaganas’ passion is in using health care simulation as a platform for interprofessional education. She served as a committee member of the Institute of Medicine’s report on measuring the impact of interprofessional education on practice. Dr. Palaganas has shaped the field of simulation\, leading the development of the Society for Simulation’s Accreditation and Certification Program\, authored their first textbook\, Defining Excellence in Simulation Programs as editor-in-chief. She urged the development of the recently released Society for Simulation dictionary\, authored seminal articles\, and co-authored field-changing research including the National League for Nursing study for high-stakes assessment using simulation. \n\n\n\n\n\nJenny Rudolph\, PhD\nExecutive Director\nCenter for Medical Simulation\nBoston\, Massachusetts\, USA \nDr. Rudolph is an organization behavior scholar who has helped health educators world-wide promote dynamic\, honest\, but non-threatening conversations through the “debriefing with good judgment” approach to reflective conversations.
