For healthcare professionals who want to teach online with skill and confidence, interactively and dynamically. Medical, nursing, and other health professions educators, this course will build your online teaching mojo. (You don’t have to be a simulationist to take Teach Online: Engage with Confidence.)

Online learning doesn’t have to be a pale imitation of “real” in-person learning. It’s a whole new way of interacting with learners. What if instead of a boring, predictable series of discussion question posts and assignments, your online courses were a dynamic journey that surprises and engages learners? This course will give faculty the confidence to create meaningful online learning experiences. Faculty have the skills to teach; we’ll show them how to transfer those skills to the online classroom – and it’s not about the technology!

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Create courses that wow learners with their interactivity and potent learning experiences
  • Reliably build online learning experiences that students love
  • Forge online connections to build the teacher-learner relationship as well as a peer community of practice
  • Apply key principles of online teaching to create social, cognitive and teaching presence
  • Avoid alienating or “turning off” your students to the whole online paradigm


Course participants meet in an interactive video conference.

Equipment Requirements

This online course is delivered via Zoom, a web conferencing platform. All materials and course interactions will occur online. In order to participate fully, each participant must have:

  • Their own computer (tablets and mobile phones do not allow full engagement )
  • Reliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed)
  • Microphone and speakers (built-in, headset or from webcam)
  • Webcam

Each individual – even those participants who are from the same institution – needs their own computer and computer headset (microphone and earphones).

The Center for Medical Simulation accepts payment by credit card, wire transfer, money order or cashier’s check in U.S. dollars. Personal checks are not accepted. You will be receiving an invoice via email, no paper invoices are issued. Your payment is due immediately upon receipt.

If you must cancel:

  • At least 2 weeks prior to course start date:
    We will allow you 1 opportunity to transfer to the same course at a later date. Cancellation or transfer requests subsequent to the first transfer will result in a forfeit of your tuition.
  • Less than 2 weeks prior to course start date:
    You will forfeit your tuition.

You will be placed on a wait list upon receipt of your application. Your tuition is due immediately upon acceptance. You will receive an email containing an invoice with payment instructions.

You are not enrolled, and do not have a reserved seat, until we have received your full tuition. Course seats are filled in the order we receive tuition payments. Since our courses fill quickly it is important for you to send in your tuition immediately to secure a seat.

Once your tuition payment is received, you will be taken off the wait list and enrolled in your preferred course provided a seat is still available. If all seats in your preferred course are filled by the time we receive your tuition payment, you will be informed that the course is full and given the option to remain on the wait list in the event that a seat later become available or switch to another course at a later date.

Required to Observe or Participate in the Course

Confidentiality of Information

During your participation in courses run by the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS), you may observe the performance of other individuals. It is also possible that you may be a participant in course activities. You are asked to maintain and hold confidential all information regarding statements and performance of individuals and details of the performance and activities.

Permission to Review Video Recordings for Educational Purposes

During the course, you may participate in online sessions that are routinely video recorded. Participants may review these recordings at a later date for educational purposes. The faculty may review these recordings at a later date for quality improvement of the training.

By applying for this course, you acknowledge to having read and understood that you may be video recorded in the course and agree to allow both participants and CMS faculty to review these video recordings for educational purposes.
