The Feedback Course

Transforming Self, Others, and Culture
(Online Course)

Course Details

For anyone who wants feedback confidence and skill or to begin growing a “culture of feedback.” Managers, clinicians, educators, and leaders: this course will give you feedback peace of mind. (You don’t have to be a simulationist to take The Feedback Course!)

  • Course Duration
    Course Duration
Meets online weekly in a 2 hour video conference session over 6 weeks and requires 1-3 hours of preparation and practice time per course week.

Do you find it difficult to give feedback to your peers or students? Do you ever wish you had feedback superpowers? Wish you never had to dread another feedback conversation? You are in good company.  We spoke with healthcare educators, leaders, and managers around the world and found a recurring theme: feedback conversations are tough! When someone has done something “wrong,” when performance or conflict management is required, people fear that the conversation will go badly, or careen out of control. They then shy away from crucial developmental conversations. The Feedback Course helps you have these difficult conversations and build a culture of feedback by experiencing it first-hand.

Using cutting edge, interactive, online skill-building techniques, this course develops your feedback muscles. You will use repetitions of self-assessment, peer feedback, practical doses of theory, and our innovative feedback skill development tool, the FOG (Feedback Observation Guide). You tailor knowledge acquisition to your learning style: read, skim summary points, or listen to podcasts. FACE (Feedback Assessment for Clinical Education)

Technology Requirements

All materials and course interactions will occur online to reach participants from different areas of the world. There are several technology requirements.

We will use 3 platforms in this course for learning, communications, and sharing materials to foster a community of practice that can continue beyond the course:

  • Learning Management System (LMS): The CMS Virtual Campus will serve as the platform for delivering course content and collecting feedback through a course evaluation.
  • Video Conferencing: We will use Zoom for our live sessions. You only need a free account to connect to our classes.
  • Messaging: To foster our community of practice, we will use WhatsApp, for asynchronous discussions. This is a free, simple, secure, and reliable messaging and calling app that is available on phones and Windows desktops all over the world.

Participants will complete activities to orient them to each other and the platforms prior to the start of the course. To participate fully in this course, each individual – even if they are attending the course with a colleague from the same institution – needs:

  • Their own computer (desktop or laptop) for Zoom sessions. We will break out into different rooms in each class. Sharing a computer limits the ability to interact.
  • Tablet or mobile phone is recommended for quickly responding to conversations in our WhatsApp group. You may use a desktop/web version of WhatsApp to interact with our group chat.
  • Reliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed). Wired internet access is preferred for our Zoom classes but a strong wireless connection or hotspot will suffice.
  • Their own computer headset (microphone and earphones)
  • Webcam
  • Zoom Desktop Client installed on their computer
    We recommend downloading
and installing the Zoom Desktop Client on the computer used for the course for full
functionality including local recording of your pre- and post- self-assessment.
  • WhatsApp installed on their mobile device
We recommend downloading and installing the WhatsApp on a mobile device to keep up with the class discussion.
  • Their own space away from others because conversations from nearby colleagues can interfere with the audio. The live sessions should be completed in a space not shared with others.

All materials and course interactions will occur online to reach participants from different areas of the world. There are several technology requirements. The course uses a team collaboration application that syncs to mobile devices and computers for convenience. Participants will receive training on the application with activities to orient the participants to each other and the application prior to the start of the course. The application will serve as the platform for learning, communications, and sharing materials to foster a community of practice that can continue beyond the course.

The online course is delivered via Zoom, a web conferencing platform. To participate in this course, each individual – even if they are attending the course with a colleague from the same institution – needs:

  • A smartphone or mobile device (e.g. tablet)
  • Their own computer (desktop or laptop). Sharing a computer limits the ability to interact. There will be many instances where we will break out into different rooms in Zoom.
  • Reliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed). Wired internet access is much preferred; wireless internet access is less likely to work well.
  • Their own computer headset (microphone and earphones)
  • Webcam
  • Zoom Desktop Client installed on their computer
We recommend downloading and installing the Zoom Desktop Client on the computer used for the course for full functionality.
  • Their own space away from others because conversations from nearby colleagues can interfere with the course audio. This course should be completed in a space not shared with others.
