SUMMARY:Weekly Webinars - Learning through Talk: Exploring Synergies between Simulation and Workplace Learning
DESCRIPTION:Recording\nWatch On-Demand Download Handout (PDF) \n\nTuition\nComplimentary – $0 USD \n\nRegister Today\nAbout this session\nTalk as joint social activity impacts communication practices\, learning\, and patient care. This session explores the important role of talk in health professions education. We can steer the talk of practice through formal means but also through informal means by fostering psychological safety through supportive relationships and learning environments. Lessons learned from healthcare debriefing will help us identify ways to address the ‘process’ and ‘content’ of talk of clinical practice to promote learning and patient care. These synergies have practical applications for learning conversations in workplace and simulation settings in three key ways: how we design curricula\, how we develop faculty\, and how we support learners. \n\nLearning Objectives:\nFollowing this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine ‘talk’ and its role in clinical education\nDiscuss how simulation and workplace talk inform each other\nExplain how talk contributes to team inclusiveness\n\n\nEquipment Requirements\nThe webinar is delivered via Zoom\, a web conferencing platform. All materials and course interactions will occur online. In order to participate fully\, each person must have: \n\nTheir own computer\, tablet\, or mobile phone\nReliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed)\nMicrophone and speakers (built-in\, headset or from webcam)\nOptional: Webcam\n\nRecording\nWe are aware that internet connection speed and bandwidth is not consistent globally and thus can cause intermittent interruption of audio and/or video from the webinar. We do everything we can to minimize problems with streaming data; however\, please be forewarned that poor connections may result in slow or choppy audio and video. We will make the entire webinar recording available after it concludes in the Resources section of our website\, including sharing any links referenced during the webinar.\n\nHost\n\n\n \n \n\n\nDemian Szyld\, MD\, EdM\nSenior Director\, Faculty Development Program\nCenter for Medical Simulation\, Boston\, Massachusetts\n \nDr. Szyld is an Emergency Medicine physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Szyld was the first Simulation and Education Fellow at the STRATUS Simulation Center at BWH and is actively involved in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and has chaired the Formal Training Affinity Group\, led the Affiliations Committee and served as an Accreditation Site Reviewer and completed a term on the Board of Directors (2016-2019).\n \n\nPresenter\n\n\n \n \n\n\nWalter Eppich\, MD\, PhD\nPrincipal Faculty\nCenter for Medical Simulation\, Boston\, Massachusetts\nPhysician\nAnn & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago\, Chicago\, Illinois\nDirector\, Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators (FAME)\nDirector of Faculty Development\, Department of Medical Education\nAssociate Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine) and Medical Education\nNorthwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine\, Chicago\, Illinois\n \nDr. Eppich has taught extensively on basic and advanced simulation educator courses. He has served as an invited speaker on topics related to simulation\, feedback\, and debriefing around the world. His research involves qualitative methodologies\, team reflexivity\, healthcare debriefing\, and teamwork in extreme environments. He focuses on how talk within teams influences learning and performance in both simulated and clinical workplace settings. Dr. Eppich has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. In the spring 2018\, he completed a field campaign to Antarctica to study teamwork in polar research teams. From 2012-2014 Dr. Eppich served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. In 2019\, Dr. Eppich was named a medical education research fellow at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm\, Sweden.\n \n\n  \n\nLearn more about Weekly Webinars: Connecting and Learning with CMS
