About this session

The Center for Medical Simulation’s Circle Up© provides a way for any member of a healthcare team who believes that patients are safer when teams coordinate their care delivery to develop their communication skills. Circle Up is a supportive system of work-based briefing, peer check-ins, and debriefing to boost clarity, coordination, and resilience in your healthcare workforce.

Healthcare teams are dealing with challenges never before seen and are experiencing extreme stress. This webinar will introduce a system for communication that supports excellence in care delivery and staff resilience.

Learning Objectives:

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the Circle Up system to coordinate healthcare team- and task- work
  • Facilitate pre-shift briefings
  • Coordinate mental rehearsals to prepare for complex care episodes
  • Facilitate post-shift/post-event debriefings
  • Use talk2support to support other team members

Equipment Requirements

The webinar is delivered via Zoom, a web conferencing platform. All materials and course interactions will occur online. In order to participate fully, each person must have:

  • Their own computer, tablet, or mobile phone
  • Reliable high-speed internet access (minimum 3 Mbps upload/download speed)
  • Microphone and speakers (built-in, headset or from webcam)
  • Optional: Webcam

Recording

We are aware that internet connection speed and bandwidth is not consistent globally and thus can cause intermittent interruption of audio and/or video from the webinar. We do everything we can to minimize problems with streaming data; however, please be forewarned that poor connections may result in slow or choppy audio and video. We will make the entire webinar recording available after it concludes in the Resources section of our website, including sharing any links referenced during the webinar.

Demian Szyld

Demian Szyld, MD, EdM
Senior Director, Faculty Development Program

Dr. Szyld is an Emergency Medicine physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Szyld was the first Simulation and Education Fellow at the STRATUS Simulation Center at BWH and is actively involved in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and has chaired the Formal Training Affinity Group, led the Affiliations Committee and served as an Accreditation Site Reviewer and completed a term on the Board of Directors (2016-2019).

Mary Fey

Mary Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, ANEF
Senior Director, Teaching and Learning
Center for Medical Simulation, Boston, Massachusetts

Dr. Fey has has been working in the field of clinical simulation since 2007 and has been responsible for developing clinical simulation programs, integrating simulation into nursing curricula, and designing simulation labs. She has completed both qualitative and quantitative studies on debriefing and provides faculty development to interprofessional groups of simulation educators.

 

Chris Roussin

Chris Roussin, PhD
Senior Director, Education Leadership and International Programs
Center for Medical Simulation, Boston, Massachusetts

Dr. Roussin is an innovator in simulation program and faculty development, devising new ways to use simulation to build relationships, quality, safety and meaning in healthcare work. He has significant experience creating strong partnerships in complex healthcare organizations to build sustainable and culture-changing programs based in experiential learning and positive communication, collaboration and feedback approaches.
