Use of CMS Intellectual Property with AI and Attribution

Use of CMS frameworks is permitted with AI for non-commercial use as long as CMS is informed. Attribution is expected for all uses and will vary with method:

  • Written Materials – Users should cite the original AIR or DASH publications where appropriate and include acknowledgment of CMS. Suggested language: “Based on the Advocacy-Inquiry Rubric (AIR) and/or the Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH), developed by the Center for Medical Simulation (Boston, MA).”
  • AI-enabled systems – Attribution should be included in system documentation or descriptions using language such as: “This system draws on frameworks including AIR/DASH developed by the Center for Medical Simulation (Boston, MA).” Where feasible, a visible acknowledgment in the interface, outputs, or “About” section is recommended.
  • Agents, bots or custom GPTs: “Uses AIR/DASH frameworks from the Center for Medical Simulation (Boston, MA).” Extended version: “Based on AIR/DASH (Advocacy-Inquiry Rubric; Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare), Center for Medical Simulation, Boston, MA.”
  • Other – It is acceptable to describe work as “inspired by AIR” or “based on the DASH framework.” Claims such as “AIR-certified,” “official,” or “CMS-endorsed” are not permitted without explicit permission.

CMS welcomes connection with individuals and organizations using the frameworks so that we can support and/or collaborate, when possible. For questions, collaborations, or to share your work, contact info@harvardmedsim.org or visit www.harvardmedsim.org.
