Mary Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, ANEF will present a session at the 2019 NLN Education Summit based on her most recent publication, “Fostering Civility in Learning Conversations: Introducing the PAAIL Communication Strategy.” Dr. Fey and Cindy Clark, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, ATI Nursing Education, will co-host the session, “Hail to PAAIL! An Evidence-Based Platform to Foster Civility and Meaningful Conversations” will take place on Friday, September 27 from 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm. The NLN Education Summit runs September 26-28 at National Harbor’s Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
The focus of Dr. Fey’s presentation and upcoming publication, PAAIL, is a mnemonic that was developed at the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) to assist those who are learning and developing their advocacy-inquiry skills. The acronym stands for:
Preview: State what you’d like to talk about
Advocacy1: I saw – state what was observed, in objective terms
Advocacy2: I think – your perspective and the impact of the observed behavior
Inquiry: I wonder – ask the receiver what was on their mind at the time
Listen: To understand the frames behind the observed action
The full article will appear in an upcoming issue of Nurse Educator, and now available online.
Dr. Fey was named an NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellow at last year’s summit and she is excited to return to this year’s event as a presenter!
