Third Annual Tristate Regional Symposium and Debriefing Workshop at Mount Sinai West

Blog - Third Annual Tristate Regional Symposium and Debriefing Workshop at Mount Sinai West

The Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (CAMS) at the Mount Sinai Health System was founded in 2007 with the goal of training physicians and nurses at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai West in clinical skills and thereby improve patient safety. What started out as one learning lab for critical care and emergency medicine training has become a system-wide training program with three labs, one debriefing room, and an arcade. According to Joseph Mathew, MD, FACP, FCCP, Medical Director of CAMS, over 2,000 learners from varying clinical backgrounds visit CAMS each year to participate in simulation-based courses.

Currently, CAMS is preparing for the 2019 Tristate Regional Simulation Symposium, now in its third year. Dr. Mathew and Priscilla Loanzon, EdD, RN, CHSE, Director of Simulation Education at CAMS, explain that the first symposium was planned as a capstone to Healthcare Simulation Week in 2017. This year’s event theme is “Scholarly Works Across the Simulation Community and Beyond.” Dr. Mathew and Dr. Loanzon are excited to help professionals from varying disciplines explore the educational benefits of simulation-based learning.

The symposium will feature expert panels, presentations, and two keynote speakers: Dr. Marc Auerbach, and Mary Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, ANEF, Associate Director of the Simulation Educator Training Program at the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS). The event is still open for registration at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/third-annual-tristate-regional-simulation-symposium-tickets-64198195531

Following the symposium, Mary Fey will be leading a Gateway to Debriefing Skills Workshop at Mount Sinai West on Saturday, September 21st. The one-day workshop introduces healthcare education faculty to the practices of Debriefing with Good Judgment©.  The program immerses participants in the deliberate practice of debriefing with skills and connects learners to a community of colleagues where they can continually develop and improve their debriefing, feedback, and bedside teaching skills.
