A Practical Model for Experiential Distance Learning

Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) and Hospital Virtual Valdecilla (HvV) faculty members Jose M. Maestre MD, PhD and Ignacio del Moral MD, PhD along with retired CMS faculty member Robert Simon MAT, MEd, EdD recently published a letter in the journal Clinical Simulation in Nursing where they noted that they had not found found a fully articulated approach for the best educational design to help attain intended learning outcomes in distance learning. They went on to describe a generalizable approach, A Practical Model for Experiential Distance Learning, combining a range of methods building along three levels of instructional interaction and emotional engagement: online asynchronous, online synchronous, and then a mix of online/onsite synchronous methods. The letter also featured an excellent infographic outlining their approach.
