The Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary K Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE as the Associate Director of its Simulation Educator Training Program (Institute for Medical Simulation). Dr. Fey (Mary) will help oversee our immersive four-and five-day educator training courses. She will also be directing CMS’ new one-day introductory debriefing course, Gateway to Debriefing with Good Judgment, which she designed and developed. Mary is succeeding Janice Palaganas, PhD, RN, NP, ANEF, who will now be leading our Josiah Macy Junior Foundation-funded initiative to develop an on-line interprofessional community of practice for faculty development.
Mary is a leader in simulation faculty development with a passion for psychological safety and reflective practice both in simulation education and nursing education more broadly. For the past several years she has been a lead faculty member in the University of Maryland and National League of Nursing’s Institute for Simulation Educators. She also brings a wealth of interprofessional faculty development experience to her new leadership role. Mary led the University of Maryland’s Debra L Spunt Clinical Simulation Laboratory, where she worked with faculty leaders from the seven professional schools to advance interprofessional education across the campus.
Mary also works to shape the quality of simulation education nationally and internationally via her work with professional societies. She is the Vice President for Outreach for the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and serves on the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s Certification Committee. Mary was a lead author of the National League for Nursing’s “Debriefing Across the Curriculum” vision statement, and the International Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning’s (INACSL) best practice standards for debriefing and simulation design.
We are delighted to add a colleague with so much personal warmth, integrity, skill and experience to our team!
Janice Palaganas, PhD, RN, NP, ANEF, the Director of Educational Innovation and Development at CMS will be turning her attention to web-based learning. Janice and Roxane Gardner, MD, MPH, DSc, MSHPE will be leading the creation of an online “third space” where faculty can develop skills related to interprofessional education. This Josiah Macy Junior Foundation-funded project will use collective, peer-to-peer, and mentor-led learning to enhance communication and reflective practice for educators working in interprofessional settings.
Please join all of us here at CMS in wishing Mary and Janice the best in their exciting new endeavors.
