The Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) will host its signature healthcare simulation instructor training workshop remotely starting in summer 2020. For over 14 years, simulation educators from around the world have traveled to Boston to attend the Healthcare Simulation Essentials: Design and Debriefing (HSE) course (formerly the Comprehensive Instructor Workshop). Realizing that travel to Boston would not be possible for all participants, CMS faculty began working on a solution.
“We had been considering an online version of the Gateway Debriefing Skills Workshop for some time,” explains Mary Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, ANEF, Senior Director of Teaching and Learning at CMS. “When COVID-19 hit, it soon became clear that we wouldn’t be doing in-person courses for some time. Given how many people attend our courses worldwide, we realized that if we were going to continue to support simulation educators, it would have to be online.”
A team consisting of Dr. Fey, Jenny Rudolph, PhD; Walter Eppich, MD, PhD; and Demian Szyld, MD, EdM started developing the curriculum for the course in early spring 2020. “The actual course objectives of the online course are the same as our in-person course,” explains Dr. Fey in the video below. “It’s a re-focusing, it’s a retooling, and it’s heightening awareness around making an impact with simulation.”
CMS faculty, including Dr. Fey, are eager to connect with learners online and continue the tradition of offering the 5-day in-person healthcare simulation instructor course: “We are confident that we’ve created an online version of the course that will be as robust, engaging, and transformative as the in-person course.”
The first session of the new online version of the course will launch in August 2020 with additional sessions in October, November, and December. The onsite version will be offered in March, April, May, and June.
