The Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) would like to share some exciting news with you. On Friday, September 29, 2023, CMS entered into an agreement to merge with the Beth Israel Anesthesia Foundation (BIAF) of the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) organization.

BIAF is the non-profit arm of the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). The Department is an international leader in the advancement of anesthesiology focused on state-of-the-art clinical care, innovative research, and exceptional anesthesia education. HMFP is a leading physician organization affiliated with Harvard Medical School (HMS) that includes 13 specialty clinical departments with more than 2,200 specialty physicians and advanced practice professionals, providing services across the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system and other hospitals across eastern Massachusetts.

Under the arrangement CMS will continue as an independent 501 (C) (3) non-profit corporation within the corporate umbrella of BIAF. There will be some changes to CMS’ Board of Trustees. However, our vision of “Experiential healthcare learning that never puts a patient at risk” and mission of “Using simulation to improve safety, quality and education in healthcare” will stay the same. CMS will remain at its current location in the Charlestown Navy Yard at 100 First Avenue, Suite 400 in Boston, Massachusetts. We will continue to employ all of our current faculty and staff and will still offer the same innovative, world-class courses and consulting services that you have come to expect.

Why Merge

Although CMS could have continued to operate solely on its own, the COVID Pandemic and the massive changes occurring across the healthcare landscape led us to realize the value of partnering with a larger, well-respected organization to ensure our continued growth and prosperity over the long term. As one of the original founders of CMS back in 1993, BIAF has a similar vision and shares the same values. We both believed that by working together, and with the addition of BIAF/HMFP resources, CMS could grow its reach, reputation, and mission exponentially further than it could solely on its own.
